Audi A6 gearbox repair

Audi A6 - new sedan the fifth generation of German production, introduced in 2018. By design new model most reminiscent of the Audi A7 Sportback, the car is built on the same modular MLB Evo platform. The vehicle is equipped with the latest electronic systems: special radars, video cameras, infrared sensors provide almost complete automatic control. The machine received a wide range diesel engines and motors for gasoline with a wide power range: the maximum power of the gasoline engine is 340 hp, diesel - 204 hp. The updated car has excellent driving performance and fast acceleration.

Gearbox Features

The latest version of the sports sedan from Audi received several versions of the transmission: paired with gasoline engines an 8-speed hydromechanical is installed machine, diesel versions of engines work with a seven-speed dual clutch robot. Classic mechanics without electronic control for the latest generation of machines was not available, although it was provided to customers in previous generations.

In the previous restyled version of 2014, in addition to robotic checkpoint, installed 6-speed mechanical box gears. In Russia, mechanics are always in high demand, since this type of gearbox provides complete control of the car and at the same time is the cheapest. The installation of mechanics allows you to reduce fuel costs and not depend on capricious electronics - the car becomes more reliable and economical.

A prerequisite for long-term trouble-free operation of the manual transmission is proper maintenance, however, it is cheaper than for automatic and robotic transmissions oil change it is enough to carry out 1 time in 70 thousand kilometers, while a small amount of transmission fluid is sufficient.

Possible causes of gearbox problems

The mechanics are distinguished by maximum reliability. The duration of its use can reach 300 thousand kilometers and even more. This allows you to use the gearbox for the entire life of the car without major repairs. However, this is only possible with proper regular maintenance and following the recommended oil change intervals. Flushing allows you to free the gearbox from contamination and prevent possible malfunctions.

The following signs will indicate a malfunction of such a gearbox:

  • Noticeable extraneous noise. Cracking, grinding, crunching occurs when there is not enough transmission fluid in the gearbox, as well as when parts are heavily worn due to increased friction. During diagnostics in the workshop, it is necessary to find the cause and quickly eliminate it.
  • Problems with the inclusion of the desired speed mode. It becomes difficult to move the lever to the desired position, the problem arises due to the wear of the components of the shift mechanism.
  • Grinding or crackling when trying to change gear. Often it indicates a clutch malfunction, wear of the mechanism is possible already during the first 100 thousand kilometers.

Professional repair in a workshop allows you to fully restore the functionality of the gearbox and return it to work. Take advantage of our professional service center Moscow.

The vehicle is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission electronic control. Switching to higher and lower stages is carried out automatically.

For reasons of fuel consumption and environmental protection, on some modifications the transmission is designed so that the maximum vehicle speed is reached only in the "S" position.

The gearbox is also equipped with a tiptronic system. This system gives the driver, if desired, the ability to manually change steps.

Switching to higher and lower forward gears is carried out automatically.

Starting off

  • While holding down the lock button (on the control lever), move the control lever to the desired position, eg position D, and release the lock button.
  • Wait until the automation switches on by creating a power circuit between the gearbox and the drive wheels (at the moment of switching on, a slight push is felt).
  • Release the brake pedal and depress the accelerator pedal.
Short stops
  • Hold the vehicle with the brake pedal, for example at traffic lights.
  • Do not press the accelerator pedal while doing this.
Parking
  • Press and hold the brake pedal.
  • Fully apply the handbrake.
  • While holding down the lock button, move the control lever to position "P" and release the lock button.
The engine can only be started when the control lever is in the "P" or "N" position.

When parking on level ground, it is enough to set the control lever to the "P" position. When the road is sloping, first tighten the parking brake to the stop and only then move the control lever to the "P" position. This reduces the load on the locking mechanism and makes it easier to pull the control lever out of the "P" position.

Attention.

  • Do not press the accelerator pedal when shifting before driving off - risk of accident!

Lever positions

This section describes each control lever position.

The indication of the actual position of the control lever is accordingly displayed on the displays of the instrument cluster.

P - parking lock

In this position, the drive wheels are blocked mechanically. The parking lock may only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary.

To set the control lever to the "P" position and move it out of this position, press the lock button (on the control lever) and at the same time the brake pedal.

R - transmission reversing

When the control lever is placed in this position, reverse gear is engaged.

Reverse gear may only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running in idle move.

To set the control lever to the "R" position, press the lock button and the brake pedal at the same time. When the ignition is on and the control lever is in the "R" position, the reverse lights are on.

N - neutral position (idle position)

This position is the idle position.

D - basic position when moving forward

In this position, shifting to high and low forward gears is automatic, depending on engine load, speed and Dynamic Shift Program (DSP). To move the control lever from position "N" to position "D" at a speed of less than 5 km / h or a stationary vehicle, you must press the brake pedal.

To be able to manually adjust gear ratio driving conditions, under certain circumstances (for example, when driving in the mountains or with a trailer) it may be preferable to temporarily switch to a manual shift program.

S - sports position

Set the control lever to the "S" position when driving in sport mode. Later switching to higher stages allows full use of the engine power reserves.

To move the control lever from position "N" to position "S" at a speed of less than 5 km / h or a stationary vehicle, press the brake pedal.

Attention

  • Never move the control lever to "R" or "P" while driving - risk of accident!
  • Regardless of the selected driving mode (except for "P" and "N"), with the engine running, hold the car with a foot brake, since even in idle mode the kinematic connection of the engine with the wheels does not completely disappear - the car "creeps" When the car is stationary with the mode turned on Do not inadvertently add gas to the movement (for example, by hand in engine compartment). Otherwise, the vehicle will start moving immediately, possibly even with the parking brake fully applied - risk of accident!
  • Before opening the hood and carrying out work with the engine running, move the control lever to the "P" position and apply the parking brake to the stop.

Note

  • In case of inadvertent transfer while moving the control lever to the "N" position, before returning to the "D" or "S" mode, release the gas and wait for the rpm to drop to idle.
  • For reasons of fuel consumption and environmental protection, on some modifications the transmission is designed so that the maximum vehicle speed is reached only in the "S" position.

Control lever lock

The locking of the control lever prevents inadvertent switching on of the range of motion and thus spontaneous movement of the vehicle from a standstill.

The blocking is canceled as follows:

  • Turn on the ignition.
  • Depress the brake pedal and hold down the lock button at the same time.

Automatic control lever lock

When the ignition is on, the control lever is locked in the "P" and "N" positions. To move it out of these positions, press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver, when the control lever is in the "P" and "N" positions, the following indication appears on the display:

"BEEM EINLEGEN EINER FAHRSTUFE IM STAND FUSSBREMSE BETATIGEN" (when you select the motion mode of a stationary vehicle, press the brake pedal).

In addition, the symbol gj for the automatic control lever lock will illuminate on the control lever yoke.

At speeds of approx. 5 km/h and above, the control lever lock is automatically released when the control lever is in the "N" position.

When the control lever is moved quickly through the "N" position (for example, from the "R" position to the "D" position), the control lever is not blocked. This will give, for example, the possibility of "jumping" a stuck car. If the control lever is in the "N" position for more than 1 second with the brake pedal released, it is blocked.

Lock button

The control lever lock button prevents the control lever from being accidentally moved to certain positions. Pressing this button releases the control lever. The figure highlights the positions at which it is necessary to press the lock button.

Key lock in the ignition

After switching off the ignition, the key can only be removed from the lock when the control lever is in position "P" (parking lock). After removing the key from the lock, the lever is locked in the "P" position.

Kick-down device

The Kick-down device allows you to realize maximum acceleration.

When the accelerator pedal is pressed sharply with the transition of the resistance point, the automation switches, depending on the speed and speed, to a lower stage. Switching to the next higher stage occurs immediately after reaching the maximum engine speed corresponding to this stage.

Attention. Remember that on slippery roads the drive wheels may spin when the kick-down device is activated - risk of skidding!

Dynamic Switching Program (DSP)

Control automatic transmission transmission is carried out electronically.

The automatic transmission is controlled electronically. Switching to higher and lower gears is carried out according to the motion programs stored in the memory.

With a restrained driving style, the automation selects an economical shift program.

With a temperamental driving style with sudden acceleration and frequent speed changes, using top speed or after a sharp press on the accelerator pedal (Kick-down), the automation works in the range of sports programs. Late transition to higher stages allows you to fully realize the power reserve of the engine. Downshifting is carried out at higher engine speeds.

The choice of the optimal traffic program for specific conditions is a continuous process. However, regardless of this, you can switch to a more sporty program by pressing the accelerator pedal sharply. In this case, the gearbox shifts to a lower gear corresponding to the actual speed of movement, allowing dynamic acceleration (for example, when overtaking) without the need to sharply depress the accelerator pedal to the stop. After switching back to the higher gear and with the corresponding driving mode, the operation according to the original program is restored.

The hill program controls gear selection on uphill and downhill runs. Thanks to this, it is not necessary to shift when driving uphill. Pressing the brake pedal while driving downhill switches to a lower gear. As a result, it is possible to brake with the engine without resorting to manual switching.

Tiptronic mode

The tiptronic system also gives the driver the option of shifting manually.

Switching to manual mode

  • Press control lever out of position "D" to the right. When manual mode is engaged, "5 4 3 21" appears on the display, highlighting the gear currently engaged.
Upshifting
  • When the control lever is moved forward (in the tiptronic position), it shifts to higher gears (+).
Downshifting
  • When the control lever is moved back (in the tiptronic position), a downshift (-) occurs.
You can switch to manual mode both while driving and while stationary.

When accelerating in 1, 2, 3 and 4 stages, the gearbox will automatically switch to the next higher stage shortly before reaching the maximum engine speed.

When switching from a higher gear to a lower gear, the automatics will switch only after it becomes impossible to increase the engine speed by increments.

When the kick-down device is operated, the transmission shifts to the next lower gear depending on the speed and engine speed.

emergency program

In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program.

In the event of a system malfunction, the automation switches to an emergency program. This is signaled by the ignition or extinction of all segments on the display panel at once.

In this case, the control lever can be moved to all positions. However, in the "D" and "S" positions, the 4th stage will turn on.

It is also possible to engage reverse gear "R". However, the electronic reverse gear lock is disabled during emergency operation.

In emergency mode, the manual switching program (tiptronic) is disabled.

When shifting the gearbox to emergency mode contact Audi as soon as possible and have the fault rectified.

Steering wheel "tiptronic"

Buttons located on the steering wheel give the driver the option of manual gear shifting as well.

Upshifting

  • Press the top side of one of the keys (+).
Downshifting
  • Press the bottom side of one of the keys (-).
The gearshift buttons on the steering wheel are in working mode when the control lever is in position "D", "S" or the manual shift program (tiptronic).

Of course, manual gear shifting via the center console control lever is also possible.
