Lada Vesta or Volkswagen Polo? - compare which is better

The coryphaeus of segment B - Volkswagen Polo - has a new, formidable competitor - Lada Vesta. Can the German sedan hold its own against the ambitious newcomer?

Volkswagen Polo is an icon of class B. This is a car that has won the hearts of thousands of buyers and quietly reigns in the segment. But with the launch of the model Lada Vesta, he received in her person a serious rival. Of course, the crown did not have to be removed, but the blow from the Russian sedan was very sensitive - the army of potential buyers of the German sedan noticeably thinned out. So how will the situation develop in the future?

Lada Vesta vs Volkswagen Polo - a hot battle is ahead!

Prestige and body

A German is a German! In this regard, the status of Volkswagen does not hold. A noble pedigree, reliability proven over the years, the admiration of customers and the famous emblem on the hood - this is the path Vesta has yet to go. But she is already taking her first big steps. Of course, AvtoVAZ is still far from the level of prestige of the German brand, but is the VW nameplate worth the overpayment that they ask for it?

Polo is a wise old-timer of the class.

In relation to the bodies, parity - both models have only sedans. However, Lada Vesta still has a potential advantage, because the marketers of the Russian company assured that a hatchback and station wagon model would soon enter the market, after which it would become much more difficult for the Polo to compete with our car.

The appearance of the Lada Vesta station wagon is "just around the corner."

In addition, from a comparison of the parameters, it can be seen that Lada Vesta is superior to its counterpart (on the left is Vesta, on the right is Polo):

- length - 4,410 mm versus 4,390 mm;

- width - 1,764 mm and 1,699 mm;

- height - 1,497 mm versus 1,467 mm;

- ground clearance - 178 mm and only 163 mm for the Polo;

- trunk volume - 480 liters versus 460 liters.

- weight - 1,230 kg (1,670 kg) versus 1,163 kg (1,700 kg).

In addition, Lada Vesta has a larger wheelbase, which affects the interior space. Against 2,635 mm, Volkswagen shows only 2,553 mm.

In terms of dimensions, the Russian sedan outright outplays the German.

Exterior

There is a diametrically opposite approach here. Lada Vesta takes with its aggressiveness and swiftness. Its chopped front, X-shaped bend of chrome elements, a powerful air intake with a radiator grill, as if merged together, and a predatory grin of the headlights make the car seem to bite into the asphalt.

The full face of the model was definitely a success for AvtoVAZ engineers!

From the side, the impression only intensifies, especially when looking at the pronounced embossing on the doors and fenders, as well as stylish wheel disks. The stern is also on the level - slanting lights with sharp edges, a powerful bumper with a black skirt at the bottom and a reflector in the center, as well as a quartet of chrome letters that have formed in the name of the car - LADA - guarantee that Vesta will always be recognized on the road.

And the profile and feed only enhance the impression.

Volkswagen is completely different. The notorious canons of the auto giant also reached the Polo, styling it like other models. It's like a miniature Passat - smooth lines of blinds in the radiator grille and air intake, solid optics, a sloping hood and rectangular fog lights create a strict and solid image.

Volkswagen Polo exudes calm and confidence.

In profile, the gaps verified with a caliper and an impeccable appearance elements, which is diluted with a bend at the bottom of the doors. Yes, and the wheels fit very harmoniously into the image. The stern does not lag behind - more than a foot, the classic configuration of the rear bumper, the outlines of the trunk lid. Volkswagen Polo directly radiates calmness.

The profile and stern of the German is a classic always in fashion.

Engines

In this regard, the situation is ambiguous. Now the German sedan is ahead, because it offers a pair of powertrains, which Vesta can only counter with one. But in the future, a serious expansion of the engine range is planned. Russian model so the situation will change.

At the moment, Lada Vesta can offer customers only one, 106-horsepower engine. This is a motor of traditional design - 4 cylinders, with 16 valves, in-line arrangement and distributed injection. Power of 106 liters. With. achieved at 5,800 rpm, with a thrust of 148 Nm at 4,200 rpm. Such data allows Vesta to accelerate to hundreds in 11.8 seconds. and develop the maximum available 178 km / h. The price for this is a consumption of 9.3 / 5.5 / 6.9 liters. in the city, on the highway and in the combined cycle, respectively.

106-strong engine Lada Vesta is generally good.

The direct competitor of the VAZ engine is the 1.6-liter German 16-valve. Its layout is generally similar to that of the Lada Vesta engine. The return is less - 85 liters. With. at 5,200 rpm, but the torque at 3,750 rpm reaches 145 Nm. Despite the lower power, the greater elasticity of this engine allows the Polo to demonstrate dynamics equal to that of the Russian sedan - 11.9 seconds. up to a hundred, at 179 km / h maximum speed. But the appetite is much less - the manufacturer claims that it is 8.7 / 6.4 / 5.1 liters.

Polo engine power is only 85 hp. with., but decent dynamics.

Volkswagen Polo has another one power unit, also a 1.6-liter, with a similar layout, but other electronic settings allow it to develop significantly more power - 105 hp. With. at 5600 rpm. They are complemented by 153 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. This provides acceleration to hundreds in 10.5 seconds, as well as a peak speed of 190 km / h. At the same time, the consumption does not differ from that of a less powerful motor.

The 105-horsepower Volkswagen engine is noticeably more cheerful.

As you can see, Lada Vesta loses to the German sedan in the engine range. However, this is a temporary phenomenon, because AvtoVAZ soon promises to begin deliveries of Vesta, equipped with three more engines. The weakest of them will be the 87-horsepower gasoline engine, the main task of which is to reduce the cost of the car as much as possible. Vesta will also be equipped with an HR16DE-H4M type unit from foreign partners of AvtoVAZ. It develops 118 hp. s., but for Russian market it was derated to 110 hp. with. to adapt to local conditions. However, the top should be a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 122 hp. With. Now it is being installed on the Lada X Ray model, but from the fall of 2016 Vesta will also be equipped with it.

In a few months, 1.8-liter engines will also be put on Vesta.

As you can see, at the moment, the Volkswagen Polo has a clear advantage, but in six months Lada Vesta will not only equalize positions, but also come out ahead.

Gearboxes

Both models have both manual and automatic transmissions. Lada Vesta offers customers a 5-speed manual VAZ-2180. This transmission was taken from Priora, but underwent modernization and modifications, as a result of which foreign components were used in its design - in particular, Schaeffler (Germany) supplies shift mechanism modules, Atsumitec (Japan) produces cable drives, etc. All this has significantly increased performance characteristics node - the switching became noticeably clearer, the lever enters the grooves more easily, and the gearbox got rid of the annoying background noise. In general, the “mechanics” of Vesta have reached the same level as imported transmissions.

The mechanics on Vesta are far from the same as on Priore.

It is opposed by the same 5-speed German transmission. It's no secret that mechanical boxes Volkswagen has already become a legend. Clear inclusions, optimal gear ratios, short-stroke lever - and this is far from full list strengths Manual transmission Volkswagen Polo.

The "handle" of the Polo is perfect in everything.

And here is the approach to automatic boxes completely different. Lada Vesta is equipped with an AMT-type robotic transmission, created on the basis of the same manual transmission type VAZ-2180, to which an electronic unit was added. Not without the use of imported components - actuators from ZF and clutch from VALEO. In general, the transmission is not bad - it switches quite quickly, does not shut up, and its 5 gears are quite enough. Of course, it lacks the clarity of a classic automatic transmission, but the AMT is simpler in design and cheaper to maintain.

AMT at Lada Vesta - simple, convenient, cheap!

Polo is equipped with a 6-band “automatic”. Naturally, he outperforms AMT Vesta in everything - switching is clearer and more timely, ride comfort is higher, as well as efficiency, thanks to 6th gear. But the price of a Volkswagen with such an automatic transmission is higher.

The “automatic” of the Volkswagen Polo looks expensive, and the box itself is not cheap.

Chassis

There are no revelations in this regard. Neither AvtoVAZ nor Volkswagen AG decided to install a multi-link rear suspension for budgetary reasons. Both models are equipped with a standard set for the segment - MacPherson struts in front, supplemented by a semi-independent suspension in the stern.

Front suspension Lada Vesta.

But it’s not for nothing that the Volkswagen Polo is considered the standard of handling in the B segment. Vesta almost reached its level, but in some nuances it still loses to the German. On the other hand, greater ground clearance allows you to move more confidently. In addition, a characteristic feature of the Volkswagen is the low location of the rear spring supports. The supports themselves are very strong, but their grinding during a collision with a curb is not pleasant.

The German spring supports hang quite low.

Interior

Inside, the approach of designers is radically different. Lada Vesta has a clearly visible bias towards sportiness. The instrument panel sports impressive wells, in front of which rises a 3-spoke steering wheel. The center console also looks very modern and attractive. The dashboard itself is made of plain black plastic, which is harmoniously diluted with metal inserts - they are combined in the interior and do not create the impression of an element that screams or breaks out of the overall ensemble.

The interior of the Russian sedan is beautiful and comfortable.

With ergonomics at Lada Vesta full order- reading readings from instruments does not cause problems, all controls on the center console are located conveniently and logically. The only thing that the driver will have to get used to is the armrest attached to the seat and its settings modes. But the chair itself does not cause any complaints. The glazing area is quite large, which guarantees good visibility.

Space in the cabin Vesta does not occupy!

The back is spacious, so that three riders will go there without much discomfort. But there are complaints from tall passengers about the low roof edge. The glass area is large, which guarantees good visibility.

Polo is made differently. Everything in it is adjusted to the millimeter - each key, each knob is in its place, so you can use all this without opening your eyes. Otherwise, there can be no complaints - a branded steering wheel with 3 spokes, a sloping center console with buttons located on it, rectangular air vents, black plastic, in combination with beige, chrome-plated instrument trim, titanium inserts and traditional for Volkswagen dashboard, the readings of which are read in a fraction of a second.

The dashboard of a Volkswagen is more convenient not to think of.

There are no problems with visibility. Armchairs in German are dense and perfectly profiled. There is a little less space in the back than in the Vesta, largely due to the narrower wheelbase, but there is more than enough room for two. To some, this Polo interior seems too dry and pedantic, but most buyers are satisfied with everything.

Polo inside - no comment.

Options and cost

In total, Lada Vesta offers 6 equipment options - from Classic to Luxe Multimedia.

Already in the base, Lada Vesta is very well equipped, which is especially noticeable in terms of security. So, the sedan has a pair of pillows, supplemented by electronic assistants (ABS + BAS, ESC, TCS, EBD, HSA) and the ERA-GLONASS system, as well as ISOFIX type seat mounts. Inside, the interior, of course, is not rich, but everything you need is there - this is an audio preparation, and steering wheel adjustment for reach and height, and front windows with electric lifts, and heated seats, and mirrors with electric and heated, and on-board computer etc. The outside of the machine stands out with 15-inch wheels (stamped). The price for this version is 514,000 rubles.

Salon Lada Vesta in the base, of course, is not rich.

Volkswagen Polo has five trim levels - from Trendline to Highline.

The basic version of Trendline is more expensive by almost a hundred thousand - 613,500 rubles. At the same time, she seriously loses to Vesta in terms of safety, because the German has only two airbags and ABS, with ISOFIX mounts. Otherwise, it repeats the Russian one - electric front windows, audio preparation, steering wheel adjustment in 2 planes, etc. The only serious plus is the presence of an air conditioner.

Polo in the starting version also does not shine with luxury.

As the cost rises, the Vesta and Polo salons are filled with functions. So, in the top Lada is estimated at 633,000 rubles. (658,000 rubles with AMT). It will additionally have air conditioning, a 7-inch TouchScreen multifunction display, navigation, 6 speakers, parking sensors, light and rain sensors, 16-inch molding, turn signals integrated into the mirrors, full power accessories, heated windshield and a host of other options.

But in the top, the difference is an order of magnitude!

Volkswagen Polo in the top version of the Highline has about the same set of options, with a navigator, 15-inch molding, full power accessories and other benefits. However, the Polo will also have Climatronic climate control. But the price for it is noticeably higher - 758,500 rubles, and with the "automatic" it will already rise to 804,500 rubles! And this is not counting the possible surcharge for option packages, which are not cheap.

In the maximum equipment, the Volkswagen Polo is chic, but also expensive.

As you can see, there are no serious differences in the level of equipment, if you do not take into account the presence of an air conditioner in the Polo base and its “climate” in the top version. But the run-up in price is more than significant - 100,000 rubles. So a potential buyer of Lada Vesta needs to think hard about whether it is worth buying a German sedan? Indeed, for the price of Polo in the database, you can buy Vesta, equipped almost to the maximum.

The approximate difference in cost between Lada Vesta and Volkswagen Polo can be understood by viewing this story from the AVTOTUT COM portal:

Overpayment for the prestige of the German brand is now worth a lot ...

EXPERT OPINION

In contact with

10.05.2017, 18:19 29253 1

Volkswagen Group Rus reported a 21% increase in sales of brand cars in Russia since the beginning of the year. The Volkswagen Polo is especially well sold, most of which is produced at a plant in Kaluga. At the same time, the price for the models starts from 726 thousand rubles, that is, we cannot call it particularly low. We all know that Polo is very popular in Europe and noticeably overtakes the much more popular Korean brands in our country.

What is the fate of this German car in Russia? Is he worth his money here or are the Russians doing the right thing by saving about 100 thousand rubles and choosing “Koreans”? How justified are these savings? Maybe you should add and fork out for the famous "German"?

Expert opinions

In fact, the current Solaris, which is very good, in many of its trim levels costs the same as the Volkswagen Polo.

I also want to note that the comparison with Europe is not entirely correct, because the Volkswagen Polo, which is sold in European countries, and the Polo, which is sold in our country, are two big differences. The same is true for the “Koreans”: there is, for example, Rio, but this is a different car. And to compare the sales and popularity of cars of these brands in our country and in Europe is not entirely correct. Especially since they are very close in price.

As for the current success of Volkswagen in Russia, this is the merit of a competent pricing policy, especially since the new Solaris has become a little more expensive, and the new Rio will probably also increase in price. As a result, the difference in cost with the Polo is not so big. In addition, our traditional love for Volkswagen cars, and indeed for European brands in general, affects.

This love, in my opinion, is completely justified. I would personally prefer a "European" than the same "Korean" or even "Japanese". However, in the budget segment, these feelings are often not taken into account in the first place - people are forced to choose with a calculator, focusing on their capabilities.

The fact is that cars, both Korean and European, which are sold on our market, have their Chinese counterparts, created primarily for the Chinese market. And this is a significant difference in quality. In other words, the Volkswagen Polo sold here and the Volkswagen Polo sold in Germany are very different cars, starting from the body type and ending with the quality of the interior finish. Therefore, it is impossible to say that we have a German product.

Sure to overpay for similar car not worth it. In my opinion, today Korean manufacturers offer a more affordable product for less money. Well, we now have the cost of buying and owning comes to the fore.

Spending money on some popular sign on the grille is, I think, just stupid.

Paphos should be present in other price categories. A person who needs not confirmation of his status, but a good vehicle, you should not go to the "Germans" for the Volkswagen Polo.

"German" he is certainly glorified, and even more so the Volkswagen Polo was made with an eye on developing countries. But I believe that in the competitive struggle they lose to the “Koreans”. Because the "Koreans" are cheaper, but in fact no worse.

In addition, the platform that Volkswagen uses has a number of obvious drawbacks, in terms of the same rigidity, for example, in the suspension, in the way it is configured.

But they take for the name, for the brand.

And our motorists willingly fall for this bait. However, like the rest of the world. Although Russia is rather an exception to the rule here, since the “Koreans” are in much greater demand with us.

Quite another matter - China. There, the Volkswagen group dominates and a fantastic number of cars of this brand are produced.

In general, I can say that this car is worth its money, and those shortcomings that were previously present in the engine and brakes are being eliminated.

Why buy a Volkswagen? Because it is liquid secondary market. And it has more liquidity than Korean cars, thanks to its emblem in the first place.

You can congratulate Volkswagen if they have such growth.

Concerning Volkswagen prices Polo, then it is certainly higher than that of the "Koreans". But the current assembly of a 1.6-liter engine, combined with an “automatic”, gives the owner confidence that such a power unit will work reliably. Moreover, it is quite economical in our times.

“Koreans”, of course, take their equipment, they are cheaper, stuffed with electronics, but they leave much to be desired in terms of their safety and the quality of materials. The engines used by the "Koreans" have long lagged behind the world market. About economy, for example, the same Kia Rio, there can be no talk: 12 liters in the city is what awaits you. Whereas the same Volkswagen Polo with an “automatic” will have 8-9 liters. Here you save your 100 thousand and spend on fuel. Moreover, in the secondary market, Polo clearly outperforms the "Koreans". Add to this a lot of sores in both Kia and Hyundai, on the suspension and on the steering wheel, which Volkswagen does not suffer from.

But being a sane person, in this price range I would prefer Skoda Rapid. Although they say that this is a Volkswagen Polo, it is still a different car.

That's really what is better: Volkswagen Polo or Kia Rio? Which state employee is the most "cheap and angry"? Here's what to take, so as not to regret later? We will try to answer these and other questions in this review-comparison.

In order for our comparison to be as objective as possible, in the review we will mention both the old Kia Rio 2015-2016 and new model 2017. Polo is sold almost unchanged, if I'm not mistaken, since 2010. There is talk that a new generation is coming this year. According to some, the Volkswagen Polo 2018 will “break” all competitors. Well, let's wait and see. In the meantime, it will be possible to compare only what we currently have on the market.

Body

Dimensions

The dimensions of the cars are almost identical.

The length of the Rio of the previous generation is 4 m 36.6 cm, the new one is 4 m 40 cm. The Polo sedan is 4 m 38.4 cm long. I consider the difference in plus or minus 1.5-2 cm to be insignificant. Since such a difference is quite likely due to the shape of the bumpers, it does not affect anything.

The width of the old Kia Rio is 1 m 72 cm, the new one is 1 m 74 cm. By the way, we noticed that in size new Rio 2017 increased a little? The width of the Volkswagen Polo remains at 1m 69.9cm for the time being.

The height of the Korean state employee is 1 m 45.5 cm for the old version and 1 m 47 cm for the new one. And the height of the German is 1 m 46.7 cm.

The wheelbase of the Kia Rio 2017 also became larger - 2 m 60 cm versus 2 m 57 cm for the old version. The 2017 Volkswagen Polo base is 2 m 55.3 cm. In this case (the old “German” and the new “Korean”) the difference is almost 5 cm. Already something.

The ground clearance of the German sedan is declared larger than that of the Korean one - by several millimeters. But upon closer inspection, everything turns out to be the same: about 16 cm. For our roads, it is quite normal.

The mass of cars is also approximately equal. After a slight restyling in 2015, the Polo sedan weighs 1163-1208 kg. The mass of the old Rio is 1110-1198 kg, and the new one is 1150-1259 kg. Here you can download more german car- this is evidenced by both passport data and tests of autobloggers. The Korean sedan starts to “sag” earlier.

Appearance

We turn to the assessment of appearance. I think (and probably most readers will agree with me) that the exterior design for a budget car is one of the main parameters by which the buyer decides in favor of a particular model.

Personally, I design the third Kia generation I like Rio. It looks quite harmonious and, therefore, attractive. What else does a small car need? By the way, I like the sedan more, although I prefer hatchbacks.

Fourth Generation Miracle Korean auto industry looks, in principle, also nothing. I especially like her feed, in particular, rear lights connected by a horizontal stripe. But the front optics are somehow not very good. Well, here, as they say, "the taste and color ...".

The appearance of the Volkswagen Polo has not changed for at least 7 years. The facelift of 2015 doesn't count. in fact, only LED daylights were added running lights in headlights. Personally, until one video blogger drew attention to this, I didn’t even know that this change is so imperceptible to an ignorant person.

In principle, that the "Korean", that the "German" appearance is quite personal. Nothing bothers my sense of aesthetics (except for the shape of the headlights of the new Kia Rio). Therefore, we can say that the exterior design was a success. At this stage, I would bet on the five and the old Rio and Polo. If you evaluate the new generation of Rio, then, probably, I will give him 5 with a minus.

Interior

Design

The interior design of budget cars can be judged, to be honest, only by the design of the instrument panel and center console. The front seats and rear sofa traditionally do not differ in special frills.

Polo Sedan

Salon VW Polo 2017 (actually, as in copies of the previous seven years) immediately declares its conservatism. There is a German restraint of lines and forms. Everything is simple and tasteful. If you do not look at the instrument panel.

The instrument panel is made in such a laconic style that I do not like it. I am not an opponent of conservatism, on the contrary, I often support it. But the instrument panel Polo Sedan looks overpriced. Some kind of baby mobile. Not seriously.

I give four.

Old Rio

The front panel of the old Rio looks somehow fresh. It feels like the design was drawn by younger people. I won’t say that I especially like it, but there is clearly a zest here.

Most of all I like the instrument panel here (unlike the German opponent). Young, with a hint of sportiness. I approve.

Part of the center console with multimedia system seems unfinished. Somehow I don't want to look at her. The eye is definitely not happy.

I also give it a four.

New Rio

The most interesting salon in new Kia Rio 2017 model year. Well, you will agree: it's just interesting to be here. There is no German boring stuff and, at the same time, everything is in its place. The eye rejoices.

The most "tasty" part, I think - the center console. Both the multimedia part and the climate control unit look very nice.

The instrument panel is made restrained, almost like a Volz. But, in principle, it will do. A little more interesting than his.

I put five with a minus.

Material quality

Thought the quality of the materials would be different. But no, everything looks and feels almost the same in all compared cars: the plastic is “wooden” and hard, the seat upholstery is simple even in the maximum trim levels.

Judging by the reviews of car owners, in the previous generation of Kia Rio, materials grew old faster. What is meant? For example, the surface of what the hand takes: steering wheel, handles, gearshift lever - wore out faster, the texture disappeared, became smooth. Silver handles became black in places - because. it's black plastic has been painted with silver paint.

The Rio's seat fillers are also of lesser quality than the Polo's. It is noticed that in the same time they are more quickly missed.

How the Kia Rio 2018 will perform remains to be seen in a few years. Perhaps the situation with the materials has been corrected. At least partially.

Volkswagen Polo Sedan does not suffer from this. At least not a word about it in the reviews. Most likely affects the good old German approach to business.

At this point, five to the “German” and three to the “Korean”.

Ergonomics

Let's go over the main points: the instrument panel, steering wheel, front seats, rear sofa.

Dashboard

Devices are well read at all compared cars. In this regard, it is difficult to find fault with something. None of the instrument panels are overloaded with information. To understand what speed, it is enough to throw a fleeting glance at the panel, there is no need to peer for a long time. Five for everyone.

Steering wheel

The grip of the steering wheel, according to the drivers, is comfortable. Nothing interferes. The number of buttons is acceptable. The most important thing, in my opinion, is that the horn is located in the center of the steering wheel. It's intuitive - no need to look for a button to "beep". Again all five.

Front seats

Here, each model has its own characteristics. According to the reviews of video bloggers who conducted a test drive, most note the fact that the lateral support of the front seats in the 2016 Volkswagen Polo is better than in the Kia Rio.

In addition, the seats themselves seem to be a little stiffer, plus there is lumbar support. In other words, the front seats in the Polo are more anatomical than in the Rio.

The new Kia Rio has short front seats. As a result, half of the thighs of long-legged riders hang in the air. In principle, problems arise not only in tall people. On long trips, due to this circumstance, the legs become numb in most.

Both the previous and the new generation Rio have problems with the driver's legroom. Sometimes you want to relax your legs, spreading your knees to the sides. So, Polo Sedan 2016 allows you to do this, but Kia Rio does not. There is little space on the right, the knee rests on the center console.

It is clear that the perception of ergonomics and convenience is a purely subjective thing. Therefore, in order to understand exactly what to choose for you, you need to drive each of the cars several times. But judging by the problems described above, I think it is possible to give an assessment quite objectively. The Polo definitely gets five, the old Rio gets four, and the new three.

Rear sofa

The rear sofas of budget cars have never been comfortable. Nevertheless, in the Volkswagen Polo they are more comfortable due to the same lumbar support and a stronger angle of inclination.

In the old Rio, the landing is more vertical, which is not very comfortable.

In the new Kia Rio, the situation has been slightly corrected with the angle of the backrest, but due to the sloping roof, the head of a tall passenger will rest against the ceiling.

Legroom rear passengers more in a German sedan. But a common disadvantage is the lack of an armrest in the rear sofa. For me personally, this is strange. Why not make an armrest with cup holders, because only two people will fit in the back anyway? Because of this omission, I can only give a maximum of four. The conservative "German" gets it. The old “Korean” gets a three, and the young one gets a three plus.

Trunk

The trunks are almost the same. At Korean sedan more. The third generation Rio boasts 500 liters, the fourth - 480 liters. The Polo has even less - 460 liters.

But the German sedan has the largest opening. Therefore, larger things will fit into it. In addition, the hinges of the trunk lid in it, when closed, occupy a smaller amount of usable space.

The trunks of all the cars presented in this comparison can be expanded due to the folding rear sofa. In the "German" the seat rises up (as in hatchbacks) and the back reclines. In both Rios, the seat does not rise, the back reclines directly on the seat. Before restyling in 2015, the back of the Polo's rear sofa was one-piece, but now it is separate - it can be lowered in parts. In the "Korean" the back always folded separately.

Explicit "cant" with the trunk only in the new Kia Rio. The essence of the problem is that the car has keyless entry, and the developers seem to have decided, as we call it, just “pond”. The idea is that the trunk will open automatically after the key is near for at least 3 seconds. As a result, this system does not work properly. Either it opens or it doesn't. And there is no opening handle on the outside! You have to either throw the bags on the ground and reach into your pocket for the key, press the button, or, again, throw the bags where you were, go to driver's door, open it and pull the lever responsible for opening the trunk (as in the old fashioned way). In general, as a result of the “scientific poke method”, you get used to the fact that the trunk opens only from the passenger compartment. Well, or not to take two hands - one must be free to get the key.

Because of its own shortcomings, the trunk of the old Rio gets 4 points, and the trunk of the new Rio, because of two jambs, gets a three. Polo's trunk gets an A.

Engines and transmissions

Polo Sedan

For Volkswagen Polo, 2 engines are available:

  • 1.4 turbo 125 hp and 200 Nm at 1400-4000 rpm,
  • 1.6 for 90 and 110 hp and 155 Nm at 3800-4000 rpm.

Turbocharged 1.4 TSI is aggregated by two types of transmissions: 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic. For the 90-horsepower 1.6-liter power unit, only "mechanics" is available, and for the 110-horsepower - both "mechanics" and "automatic".

According to the passport, Volkswagen Polo 1.6 with 90 hp accelerates to 100 km / h in 11.2 seconds; The 110-horsepower version on a manual transmission accelerates to “hundreds” in 10.4 seconds, and on an automatic transmission in 11.7 seconds. Polo 1.4 turbo spends only 9 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h.

Fuel consumption for all types of Polo engines is almost the same (values for automatic transmission in brackets):

  • 1.4 TSI - 7.5 (7.3) liters. in the city and 4.7 (4.8) l. along the track,
  • 1.6 / 90 HP - 7.7 liters. in the city and 4.5 liters. in the country,
  • 1.6 / 110 HP - 7.8 (7.9) l. in the urban cycle and 4.6 (4.7) l. in the suburban cycle.

Judging by technical specifications, the most preferred in terms of dynamics is a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. Firstly, it has more power, and secondly, it is more high-torque, moreover, the maximum torque is available already from 1400 rpm and stretches up to 4000 rpm. Very good shelf.

For 3 engine options we put 3 points.

Old Rio

For the 3rd generation Kia Rio, 2 engines were available:

  • 1.4 for 107 hp and 135 Nm at 5000 rpm,
  • 1.6 for 123 hp and 155 Nm at 4200 rpm.

The engines were paired with a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

According to passport data, acceleration to 100 km / h in a car with a 1.4 liter engine. on the "mechanics" takes 11.5 seconds, on the "machine" - 13.5 seconds. For a sedan with a 1.6 engine, these are 10.3 and 11.2 seconds, respectively.

Fuel consumption according to the passport (values for automatic transmission in brackets):

  • 1.4 - 7.5 (8.5) l. in the city and 5 (5.2) l. in the country,
  • 1.6 - 8 (8.6) l. in the urban cycle and 5 (5.3) l. along the track.

Motor 1.4 is definitely weak for a car weighing well over a ton (especially if it is fully loaded). But 1.6 is more powerful than Volkswagen, the torque is the same. The difference in power, of course, is not great, but for those who like to ride at high speeds, the difference will play a positive role.

For 2 engines in the range we put 2 points.

New Rio

For the new Rio, they prepared a brand new 1.4, but 1.6 left the old one. Apparently, they did not see the point in inventing something new. Probably, in terms of its technical characteristics, it is quite normal for its time. The most interesting thing is that his torque has changed a little: now it is not 155, but 151 Nm at 6300 rpm. As you can see, its thrust was reconfigured in the direction of high revs.

The new 1.4-liter engine produces 100 hp. (previously it was 107). Torque is also reduced. Now it is 132 Nm at 4000 rpm. What guided Kia - I still do not understand.

The new 1.4 engine accelerates the Kia Rio to 100 km / h in 12.2 seconds. on manual transmission and in 12.9 sec. on automatic transmission. Old redesigned 1.6, respectively - in 10.3 and 11.2 seconds.

Fuel consumption according to the passport is as follows (values for automatic transmission in brackets):

  • 1.4 - 7.2 (8.5) l. in the city and 4.8 (5.1) l. along the track,
  • 1.6 - 8 (8.9) l. in the urban cycle and 4.8 (5.3) outside the city.

If we compare passport data on fuel consumption of new and old power units, it turns out that Korean engineers have worked to reduce the appetite of engines. Maybe this caused some changes in torque?

For 2 engines I put 2 points.

Driving performance

To answer the question which car is better in terms of driving performance, I think no one can. The thing is that most budget cars in this respect are almost similar to each other. Of course, everyone has their own nuances, but by and large everything is the same. The bumps are equally “swallowed”, they steer almost the same and hold the road. Therefore, you can understand what you like best only by conducting a test drive.

The only moment can be announced. In the Kia Rio, the steering wheel in the lower position becomes tight, plus at high speed, according to some, it becomes “empty” - the feedback disappears. The Volkswagen Polo did not have this problem.

Since the perception of driving performance is a purely personal matter, I will not compare cars and evaluate them on this point.

Summarizing

First, let's sum up the scores:

I am not a fan of Volkswagen, Polo in particular. But somehow it happened that even I gave him a final score much higher than the Kia Rio. To be honest, up to this point, the Korean state employee impressed me more. So this is the most unexpected result for me. Therefore, I think that if I were faced with the question of what is better to buy: a Volkswagen Polo or a Kia Rio, then most likely I would take a German sedan, even though its interior makes me a little sad. Longing, in its essence, is an emotion, and it is better to be guided in the choice by reasonable arguments.

To the question of what is more reliable, I think it can be answered that at present, automakers are trying their best to ensure that their cars are at a high level in terms of reliability. Especially ambitious Korean brands like Kia - they sleep and see that the consumer perceives their cars on an equal footing with Japanese and European brands. From this it follows that the compared budget cars practically do not differ in reliability.

Another thing, which is cheaper to maintain? This question can be answered by looking for spare parts in online stores. A cursory look at several sites reveals that body iron, optics, etc. prices are higher for Kia Rio, and for mechanics of different prices, higher for Volkswagen Polo. So, again, everyone has to make their own choice.

The Polo has become a bestseller for a reason - it is a well-thought-out car that perfectly meets the aspirations of its target audience. Strengths he has significantly more than the weak. And here are the main advantages of the car.

Adaptation to Russia

Volkswagen has paid a lot of attention to adapting the Polo to harsh operating conditions. A high-capacity battery and a more powerful starter are installed here. The manufacturer claims that the engine starts without problems at temperatures down to minus 36 ° C. The washer fluid reservoir holds as much as 5.5 liters. By the way, when this Volkswagen debuted, its ground clearance was 150 mm. The Russians actively complained that this was not enough. The Germans reacted constructively to criticism - they increased ground clearance up to 163 mm, which made the car much more adapted to our realities.

Handling and comfort

The vast majority of drivers with Polo instantly develop a complete understanding - a very understandable, flexible character of the car. Adjusted steering effort and precise responses add confidence in running corners, and successful suspension settings endow the car with stability, stability and comfort - most road bumps go unnoticed by the crew. During the last restyling, the Germans improved sound insulation. Now the rumble from the road and sandblasting are much less annoying than before. Against the general favorable background, only the roar of the engine stands out, but it does not come to discomfort.

Ergonomics and equipment

Behind the wheel - a typical Volkswagen situation. Simple and concise forms that will remain relevant for many years to come. Build quality is decent. Nowhere does not backlash and does not hang out. Ergonomics is completely standard - such a comfortable fit and a verified arrangement of controls in this segment is still to be found. The level of equipment is pleasantly surprising. And if the climate control, radio, rear view camera, electrically heated windshield and washer nozzles do not seem out of the ordinary, then the presence of App Connect support, as well as fog lights with the cornering light function on a budget car look like real chic.

Wealth of choice

Potential buyers will have to rack their brains when choosing "their" car. No wonder, because Polo is offered in 17 different versions! The basic aspirated 1.6 (90 hp) is combined exclusively with a 5-speed manual, while its boosted version to 110 “horses” can also be obtained with a 6-speed automatic. In addition, the Polo is available with an advanced 1.4-liter 125-horsepower turbo engine, which is available with both a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG transmission. In the initial version of the Conceptline, only the 90-horsepower Polo is offered, and in the sporty GT, only 125-horsepower.

Price

The base Polo is estimated at 599,900 rubles. For a modern foreign car, this is a very interesting proposal. With a 110-horsepower engine, the price starts at 709,900 rubles (the equipment will be richer in this case), and the Germans ask for a turbo version from 769,900 rubles. By the way, you will have to throw 45,000 rubles for the machine, while the surcharge for the DSG will already be 70,000 rubles. As you can see, the prices are quite reasonable. And enduring popularity Polo the best confirmation of this.

But this Folks has one shortcoming, which becomes more and more serious every month.

Heir on the way

The life cycle of modern models is six to seven years. Against this background, the four-door Polo stands out, and not for the better. Still, because he is now 9 years old! By now, this is already a veteran car. Although it consumer qualities are at a high level, and technically it is not particularly outdated, there is one factor that can discourage you from buying a Polo. It's about a successor. The sedan under the name Virtus was shown last fall in Brazil, and in the foreseeable future it will appear with us (most likely, it will be renamed Polo). So, buying the current model, you need to know that very soon it will be discontinued. Accordingly, with the release new car your Volks will inevitably fall in price.

Coming to a car dealership, you should not rush to make a choice, you need to make a short review of each of the presented models, or maybe even arrange a test drive for your favorite VW Polo or VW Jetta car. In any case, it is not necessary to exclude from the field of view and more expensive cars- it is possible that among the models of a class above the same brand there is an option that is beneficial for you in every sense. However, as practice shows, in reality, buying a car for an average person looks like this.

Any potential client dealer center Volkswagen has probably already made its choice in advance. This can be argued for several reasons:

  • firstly, almost every price niche has a single version of the model, but in several trim levels, which allows you to choose a car to your taste, in terms of its optional equipment;
  • secondly, most models come in a certain type of body, which significantly narrows the number of possible options for purchase;
  • thirdly, in most cases, it is the financial capabilities of the client, as a rule, by themselves make the choice for him.

But even if everything happens this way, you should not be upset, because even an expensive car does not always justify its cost in practice. Consider how the VW Jetta differs from the VW Polo and how this difference in “prestige” is financially justified.

Alignment to "C - class"?

In order to equalize the chances of winning, and for a more objective opinion from the outside, we decided to make a comparison of the VW Jetta model of the basic configuration and the top version of the VW Polo car. As a result, we got applicants equal in strength and value. Now a small review for each of the presented models.

Volkswagen Jetta is the implementation of the 3 in 1 car project. That is, a model that was originally supposed to become not only prestigious and comfortable, but also affordable. In practice, only the first two points of the plan were implemented. As for the cost, everything is also a big question here.

The fact is that in order for the Jetta to look like a worthy premium class sedan, it must be purchased complete with a suitable 122-horsepower turbocharged engine. The rest of the options will only be a distant vision of the “C-class” and will not bring the expected delight from the dynamics and power. Today, the average price for such a modification is 778 thousand rubles. and this price tag is constantly updated, increasing, each time, by about a thousand dollars. We still take into account Volkswagen model Jetta with 85 hp and having a fast acceleration to 100 km / h in 13 s. It practically does not differ from the basic version of the Jetta. The undeniable advantages of such a basic car can be considered the presence of:

  1. inflatable safety curtains;
  2. tire pressure sensors;
  3. heating of windshield washer nozzles.

It is also believed that the Jetta attracts the most buyers due to its economic and environmental parameters.

What can please us in response to a more modest, but no less daring volkswagen sedan Polo and its top equipment. Now let's find out the most Interesting Facts and indicators.

VW Polo sets new standards

Despite the fact that the sedan is assembled in Kaluga, however, the Polo is not much inferior to the Jetta, except perhaps if we compare them in terms of overall dimensions. The Polo sedan base is much shorter, but for the full comfort of passengers rear seats some 3.5 cm are missing, which is not so tragic. The trunk is quite suitable in size and leaves no doubt about its spaciousness. Thanks to its lighter weight, the Polo gets off to a good start with a 105-horsepower unit under the hood and shows excellent dynamics on the road. Still would! After all, an engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters is much easier to cope with a small and light sedan.

What else you need to pay attention to when making your choice in favor of the top modification of the Polo from Volkswagen:

  • dynamic stabilization system;
  • windshield heating;
  • rear parking sensors;
  • light alloy wheels;
  • built-in original alarm.

Well, if you additionally order the Premium package, which includes a whole set of options responsible for safety, then as a result we get a comfortable and safe sedan, with good dynamics and a large trunk.

Options: Degree of implementation VW Jetta VW Polo
Interior Salons look decent in both models. The Jetta has a better on-board computer, the Polo has a more interesting seat finish. Between the cars there is only a significant difference in body length of 10 cm. + +
capacity The Polo is spacious enough, but it's hard to argue with a larger sedan - the Jetta has a more spacious and comfortable interior, and this model also offers more space for rear passengers. +
load capacity The luggage compartment of the Polo, although not the largest in its class, but there are no complaints about it. And yet, in terms of cargo transportation, the Jetta is clearly a priority. +
Dynamism As it turned out, exactly the same power unit as that of the VW Jetta allows Polo to show more interesting acceleration dynamics. +
Controllability Both sedans know how to give the driver pleasure. But, as practice shows, a more budgetary Polo rides with a 1.6-liter engine much more interesting than a similarly equipped Jetta. +
Comfort Comfortable driving is the advantage of both models, however, on uneven road surfaces, the Jetta still shows some advantage. +

Thus, if we conduct a small comparative analysis of the given data and characteristics, then the conclusion about whether there is a difference between the Volkswagen Jetta and Polo suggests itself. With almost identical functionality, the budget Volkswagen Polo looks more worthy in terms of dynamism, maneuverability, and economy. It is also worth mentioning that for a price similar to the base Jetta, you can get more generous optional equipment on the Polo, and even save a little. Meanwhile, it should be understood that this difference will have to be "paid" with a smaller capacity and spaciousness of the cabin, as well as a less energy-intensive suspension. As a result of the study, we got all the advantages and disadvantages of each of the models, but it is still necessary to understand that when purchasing a vehicle of increased danger, the main task of any car owner is to ensure safety, then any trip will be a pleasure.
