Bavarian roots

The novelty is built on the global front-wheel drive platform BMW (the MINI brand belongs to the BMW concern), which is used by all MINI passenger models, as well as compact representatives of the Bavarians, in particular, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer, as well as the X1 crossover. Soon, the next-generation BMW will also ride on the same chassis.

The initial modification is equipped with front-wheel drive, mechanical box gears and a 3-cylinder petrol 1.5-liter turbo engine with 136 hp. However, it can be equipped with both an all-wheel drive transmission and an “automatic”. All other options offered in Russia have 4-cylinder engines, all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. This is the version with the 2 liter 192 hp gasoline unit, as well as modifications with a 2-liter turbodiesel developing 150 or 190 hp. depending on the degree of forcing. We have a 150-strong version on the test.

Compared with the previous generation model, the new Countryman has dramatically increased in size. He added 20 cm in length and 3 cm in width. The height, however, decreased by 0.4 cm, but this is practically nothing. The wheelbase has grown by 7.5 cm. The volume of the luggage compartment has increased by 100 liters - from 350 to 450 liters. In a word, the world has never seen such a big MINI.

Brand affiliation in the design of the novelty is immediately recognizable: this “big-eyed” front end with a slight slope of the windshield has many fans around the world. But if earlier they were forced to put up with the lack of practicality of their favorite car, then the Countryman is quite good as a family car. vehicle.

First of all, there is a really spacious interior. Therefore, contrary to custom, I will begin the story of the "inner world" of the crossover with rear seats. Surprisingly, there was more space than expected. An impressive gap remains in front of the knees, for the feet there is a sea of ​​​​space under the pillow of the front seat, even if it (the seat) is lowered all the way, and there is plenty of space above the head. Despite the fact that the test copy is equipped with a panoramic roof, which ate a few centimeters under the ceiling. The backs of the sofa are adjustable in angle, there is a convenient folding central armrest with cup holders and ventilation deflectors between the front seats. In a word, more than one hundred kilometers can be overcome with comfort.

You can't fault the driver's seat either. The seat is dense, with a well-adjusted profile, pronounced lateral support and a retractable cushion extension. Landing by crossover standards is low, but against the background of other MINI models, we can say that the driver is quite high.

Ergonomics, when compared with its predecessor, has become normal. For example, the control of the power windows, which the previous Countryman had using toggle switches on the center console, is now located like everyone else - on driver's door. The central screen has become touch-sensitive, but personally it is much more convenient for me to use the selector on the central tunnel - in fact, a modified joystick of the "beam" iDrive interface. And, finally, the speedometer is no longer in the center of the front panel, as it was before, but in front of the driver's eyes. Moreover, there is a retractable "glass" projection display.

The trunk is also full - its 450-liter volume allows you to fit enough things. In addition, the compartment increases if you move the rear sofa forward by 13 cm, but if you fold the backs of this very sofa at all, you will get a flat floor at the back. In the underground, in the basic equipment, there is another niche for luggage, but for a surcharge it can be filled with a “stowaway”. The rear door has an electric drive with the function of "foot" opening (movement of the foot under the bumper). If the owner likes to relax in nature, the car can be equipped with a picnic bench with dirt protection installed right there in the trunk.

Turbo diesel happiness

Being in the cabin, it is practically impossible to understand that there is a turbodiesel under the hood: there are almost no vibrations during its operation, and the characteristic “chirp” is heard only when the windows are open. And how he pulls! When you press the accelerator pedal, there is absolutely no turbopause effect even with “standard” engine and gearbox settings, and if you switch to “dynamic” mode, the car begins to respond to fuel with the agility of a small sports car. At the same time, the 8-band “automatic” switches faster, smoother and more skillfully than a professional driver, but when you want to drive economically, you can turn on the “green” mode. In this case, the accelerator pedal becomes a little “dull”, and the number of kilometers won in the “standard” driving mode is displayed on the tachometer dial in green numbers. I tried a bit and… turned on the "sport" settings. Because it is impossible to drive safely on this car!

It seems that there is nowhere to hurry, and I'm going faster than the traffic flow, angry at the "slow-movers" and speed cameras. Rather, away from the city, away from busy highways: there are winding roads in mind, quite free from other cars, and I really need to go there ...

What a nice weight poured into a small sharp steering wheel, making only 2.5 turns from lock to lock, how cool this crossover with 165 mm ground clearance, almost without heeling, is screwed into turns! I enjoy the "delicious" effort on the controls and their precise reactions to my actions. Now the tires are squeaking in the corners, and I am accelerating, reveling in my merger with the car! And even on the verge of slipping, it is not difficult to feel the balance of the crossover. This is a real MINI, without size discounts and a high center of gravity!

Surprisingly, the new Countryman feels great on highways with long straights and gentle turns. I remember that the predecessor behaved rather nervously in such conditions. Here, the sharp steering wheel does not prevent the driver from feeling confident at high speed, since he has a very clear “zero”. And the crossover practically does not react to rutting, despite the optional 18-inch “shoe”, two sizes larger than in the standard configuration. And the turbodiesel, which carries “only” 150 hp, continues to pull briskly at a speed of 130 km / h, making it easy to overtake.

It would seem that with such sporty settings and a high body, the crossover chassis should be furiously tough, which was just evidenced by the previous generation model. However, nothing of the kind! Yes, the suspension is dense, the car repeats the profile of the road surface and “itches” a little on asphalt pimples, but it swallows all the patches and cracks with a bang, while the driver and passengers have a feeling of a high energy intensity of the chassis. Only on large potholes does the suspension work with a knock, but in general the level of comfort is not bad. And for a MINI, the smoothness of the ride is completely unprecedented. If you "change" the car into standard 16-inch wheels, and even abandon the "runflat" (the test copy has 18-inch runflat), the Countryman will certainly become even more comfortable.

And the sound insulation has become better: although the rumble from the tires is heard clearly in the cabin, it is not so strong as to be annoying. All other noises are perfectly balanced and none of them stand out.

The new MINI Countryman is the first car in the last couple of years that made me drive past my house in the evening and go for a night looking to ride on country roads. He wins the hearts of the weaker sex with his charismatic appearance and unique interior, while he captivates men with perfect driving performance. It remains only to find 2,100,000 rubles - this is how much this test copy costs.

MINI are different: coupe, crossover, and station wagon. Now some Paceman has appeared. What kind of car is this? How far has he gone from the very first, original MINI, created by Sir Issigonis himself?

After two flights to Spain, Mallorca, and just a hard day, before going to bed, not lambs, which are usually considered, but MINI variants swam before my eyes: classic, Cabrio, Coupe, Roadster, Countryman, Clubman, Clubvan was remembered for the company. Now there's another Paceman. As many as eight modifications. Dreamed after that mini-pickup trucks and even mini-sedans.

In the morning I was waiting for a meeting with MINI Paceman. It came to mind that rather, this is Countrywoman, that is, the same Countryman, but three-door and more elegant.

The interior can be distinguished from the Countryman cabin only by the power window buttons transferred to the doors from the center console, the rest is “one to one”.

To me, the "muzzle" of the Countryman is more like a fish, falling in love with him in such circumstances is extremely difficult. But Olya, the journalist and my companion, are delighted:

I recently bought myself a Countryman, why rush! Paceman is just a dream. I really like the usual MINI, but the ground clearance is too small, so I took the Countryman. We had to wait a little.

The Paceman has a sloping roof, wider doors, and in general it really looks more feminine, more dynamic and more compact than the Countryman. In fact, the three-door MINI is 4109 in length, it is longer than the Countryman, albeit only 12 mm, but it is 43 mm shorter than its fellow (height 1518 mm).

Regarding the clearance - a complete optical illusion. The highest clearance is for the turbo diesel Paceman, the MINI Cooper SD model with a 2-liter 143-horsepower engine transmitting 305 Nm. The petrol Cooper has a ground clearance of 135mm, while the sporty Cooper S Paceman with a sporty lowered suspension is 124mm. For comparison: ground clearance MINI One (hatchback) - 139 mm, Countryman - 149 mm.

The combinations of colors, textures and trim materials are endless. Even for the backlight, you can choose from six color options. The corners of the panels are nicely rounded.

Less in Paceman and space inside the cabin. The ceiling above the driver and front passenger is lower by 20 mm, above rear passengers- by 12 mm. Not to say that it would be crowded in the back, but the problem is how to get into the back seat. This maneuver requires acrobatic training.

The trunk has also decreased, by 20 liters, to 330, and if you fold the backs of the rear seats, then by 90 liters. The Countryman will fit 1170 liters, and the Paceman will fit 1080.

Well, the Paceman is certainly lighter than the Countryman! Yes. For 5 kg. This is if you compare turbo versions. According to technical data, the three-door is 0.1 s faster than the four-door in acceleration to hundreds: 7.5 seconds on the mechanics and 7.8 seconds on the six-speed automatic.

I got a Cooper S with a manual for a test drive.

The chair is comfortable and holds up well. But adjusting its height is not convenient, the handle is still located behind the central box.

If you managed to get into the back seat, then it is comfortable to sit on it. Instead of a central armrest, there is a console on which mounts for tablets and phones or cup holders are installed. The high window line gives a sense of security.

The Paceman accelerates best of course in sport mode. In it, the engine at 1700 - 4500 rpm transmits 260 Nm, 20 more than in standard mode. Accelerates confidently, without bursts and jerks. The uniform hum of the turbo engine is disturbed only when sport mode let go of the accelerator - pops are heard in the muffler. Steering sharp, the same as in the Countryman JCW, only 2.3 turns of the steering wheel all the way to one side and the other. In standard mode, the steering wheel is too light, in sport mode it is not informative enough. The Paceman makes turns confidently, the roll is less than that of the Countryman, but still the passage is not a reference.

When asked about body rigidity and lap times on the Nordschleife, MINI brand manager, former director of the M division, Kai Segler, answers something like this: “These numbers are not interesting to our customers, understand, we don’t just build cars, they are a kind of communicators, they bring people together. MINI drivers smile at each other when they drive to work. We are like a family, we arrange trips together.”

The Paceman looks more dynamic than the Countryman, this is most likely due to its lower height. But in fact, their drag coefficient is the same, 0.36.

How this MINI unites people I soon felt. Moved off the asphalt and "sat down". Just started digging - an unexpected rescue came. Three middle-aged friends, a Frenchman, a German and a Swiss, helped Olya and me to pull out the car. Yeah. MINI brings you together, no doubt about it. However, I personally prefer to meet in a more relaxed setting.

As already mentioned, we got a Paceman Cooper S with a rather stiff sports suspension, on optional 18-inch wheels. Shakes in it absolutely mercilessly. But you can overcome such pits, on which a car with a soft suspension will strike a bumper. Of course, in order to overcome obstacles, the trajectory must be built correctly. And yet, I would recommend buyers in Russia not to take a sports package, and even with large wheels.

The trunk is not only smaller than that of the Countryman (330-1080 versus 350-1170 liters), it is, unfortunately, also less convenient. Lanterns, located horizontally, look very attractive, but the luggage opening is narrowed quite significantly.

It is already possible to place an order with Russian dealers, deliveries began in March. Please note that for the fact that there are no rear doors you will have to pay extra. Paceman is more expensive than Countryman by 55,000 - 70,000 rubles. The basic configuration of the front-wheel drive Mini Cooper Paceman with an atmospheric 1.6-liter 122-horsepower engine and an ordinary air conditioner costs 995,000 rubles, this version with a manual transmission is unlikely to be popular with us, sales of Countryman with such a filling are 2%. For a car with an automatic transmission, you will have to pay 1,070,000 rubles. Mini Cooper S Paceman with all-wheel drive, a turbocharged 1.6 liter 184-horsepower engine and mechanics will cost 1,350,000 rubles, add 75,000 rubles and you can take it with an “automatic”.

It is better not to drive into the sand on a front-wheel drive Paceman, especially on a sports version. At low speeds, there is not enough traction and you have to burn the clutch, helplessly fidgeting in the sand. Do not spare the extra 1900 euros and take it with ALL4, all-wheel drive. And off-road tires for 500 euros also do not interfere at all. We did not have such luxury, but we found friends on Land Rover Defender, MINI really united us, especially when a cable was found.

The towing hook was discovered by accident, it was under the seat. But the need for it by that time had already disappeared - we were pulled out of the sand by the suspension arm.

What is MINI betting on the Paceman? What other modifications to expect?

Mr. Segler jokes: “Maybe a MINI pickup truck? I don't know, the idea was to release the M3 truck in 2011. Seriously speaking, when entering a new segment for us, we carefully weigh pro-et-contra. The company expects the Paceman to be as popular as the Range Rover Evoque. Of course, it is smaller, but the price is more affordable. Next year we will show a new generation of MINI, they will be a new round in the evolution of the family.”

The MINI Paceman John Cooper Works will be shown at the January Auto Show in Detroit. This charged version is equipped with a turbocharged 218-horsepower engine that transmits 280 Nm of torque and a sports suspension with reinforced stabilizers roll stability, and the ground clearance is 124 mm lower than the base one by 10 mm. The drive will be available only full, the choice of transmissions - between 6-speed manual and automatic. It is a pity that this will not add agility to the Paceman, up to a hundred in 6.9 seconds in any case. The cost is 1,750,000 rubles, and orders began to be accepted in March.

The fastest MINI.

I'm sitting in the Mini John Cooper Works GP and I have the free Circuito Mallorca RennArena, a 3.2 km track, at my disposal. In the cabin, instead of the rear seats, there is a half-frame safety, from the speaker comes: “ready?”

A turbocharged engine boosted to 218 horses, which accelerates this MINI to hundreds in 6.3 seconds - this is exactly what is stated in the documentation. The standard 211-horsepower MINI JCW is 0.2 seconds slower, although both versions weigh the same, 1,160 kg each. The GP I'm going to drive around the track is the fastest MINI: its drag has been reduced by 6% (from 0.36 to 0.35) maximum speed increased to 242 km / h. This MINI is faster than the Challenge by 2 km/h and the regular JCW by 4 km/h. In addition, the effect of lifting forces was reduced by 90% by mounting an aerodynamic body kit: a rear wing and a diffuser.

Externally, the semi-racing GP stands out thanks to the developed diffuser.

On the track, the car is a real pleasure. The steering wheel is ideally informative and optimal in terms of severity, the driver will instantly know about a slip or slip. Potential blocking is simulated electronically, it slows down the inner wheel and transfers more torque to the outer one, which has better grip. The traction control system is not set up so hard, it does not "strangle" the engine at the exit of the turn.

There is no rear sofa and no luggage rack. Instead of them - a pipe.

Specially designed lightweight wheels are a hallmark of the GP.

We managed to find a common language with the car already in the first round. On the second I went already with an understanding of where to turn, where to slow down and began to attack the track. The grip on the GP track is simply phenomenal: the sports suspension and sports tires (Kumho Ecsta V700 215/40 R17) do their job. For MINI JCW ground clearance- 13 cm, it is designed for ordinary roads. The MINI GP has an average of 9.1 cm, it varies within 2 cm, this allows you to customize it for different tracks. By default, the convergence of the rear and front wheels is reduced in it, the camber is increased. Thanks to this, the speed in turns increased, and the turning radius also increased: it was 10.7 meters, and became 12 meters.

Another gain cross member is hidden under the hood along with the “overclocked” to 218 hp. 1.6 liter turbo engine. Large turbocharger with new radiator, different cylinder head and larger intake valve plates, completely replaced exhaust system.

The most powerful six-piston brakes did not lose their effectiveness over four laps. The front discs in the GP are ventilated, with a diameter of 330 mm, for comparison, the JCW has 316 mm.

The Russian office of MINI makes its cash register on Countryman crossovers: last year, 2012, this model accounted for almost two-thirds of sales! But a real crossover should only be with all-wheel drive! Otherwise, what's the point of it?

Especially in such a "crossover" as the MINI Countryman. The ground clearance of the “charged” five-door is a modest 149 millimeters, that is, less than that of some C-class sedans popular in Russia, and the suspension travels are simply microscopic. So if you really don't need four-wheel drive - take the regular "Mini" or the Clubman version: otherwise why pay such money for? For a protective body kit made of dark plastic?

A pair of mufflers, pseudo-air ducts in the rear bumper, a spoiler visor on the fifth door - the Countryman Cooper S looks like a real bully.

Package for money

Traditionally for MINI, many options can be purchased in packages, which is a little more profitable than individually. The cheapest set of add-ons will cost 30 thousand (it will be a package of electrical adjustments and heating), and the most expensive - 188 thousand rubles.

After all, a small MINI crossover is not cheap at all: the basic 122-horsepower version with “mechanics” in Russia is sold for 995 thousand rubles, and with an “automatic” it is almost 80 thousand more expensive. For an all-wheel drive Cooper S with a manual transmission, they will ask for 1.28 million rubles, and for a version with an “automatic” - at least 1.354 million. And we must take into account that these will be cars in a rather meager configuration. You will have to pay extra for bi-xenon headlights (42 thousand rubles), and for separate climate control (24 thousand), and for big wheels with stripes on the body; for "music", navigation (46 thousand), heated windows, mirrors and seats (from 3 to 17 thousand for each item in the list of options) and even for the stabilization system.

What else can you buy for 1.8 million rubles

As a result, the test car, crammed with options to the eyeballs, received a price tag, which included the figure of 1.782 million rubles - almost half a million more than the base model. But this is not the limit - we did not have, for example, a panoramic roof for 59 thousand rubles, a Harman Kardon audio system for another 50 thousand, and sports suspension for 12 thousand. And it's good that it wasn't!

Because even with the stock chassis, the MINI Countryman Cooper S feels crushingly tough!

A blue MINI crossover with a white roof and white wheels is a stylish little thing. And compact - it is no more difficult to park on it than on any B-class hatchback. More precisely, even simpler: it has short overhangs and a little more ground clearance than small hatches.

It took almost a week to get used to the Countryman's suspension settings. At first I wondered: is he really so tough? I drove through all the cracks, pits and joints either quickly or slowly, with an empty cabin and with passengers. Equally tough. Checked tire pressure - normal. At some point, even a crazy thought appeared that they forgot to remove the transport spacers in the suspension on the test car - I have heard about such true stories more than once.

But no: "Mini" is just very tough, and that's it. Dot.

Average fuel consumption recorded during the MINI Countryman Cooper S test

Only later did I understand the rules of driving the Countryman: you have to dodge all, even the most insignificant defects in the roadway. And nothing else. Moreover, the British crossover is adapted quite well for the “road slalom”! Minimal rolls (thanks to the stiffer suspension), fast responses to the turns of the “short” (a little more than two turns from lock to lock!) Steering wheel and precise and very effective brakes.

As a result, each trip turned into a game of checkers: I drove around all the holes on the road - well done. I couldn't - bang! Get the hardest hit on the suspension. I don't exaggerate! In the first week, I had to stop and check the wheels two or three times, expecting to see a herniated disc the size of a pineapple or a split disc. Then I got used to it.

On good roads, the Countryman Cooper S rides "flat" and precise - there is hardly a car in this class with a similar handling character.

I'm also used to the toy appearance of the MINI Countryman Cooper S. It looks like a 1:1.75 scale model of an SUV - big wheels, a sassy face with big headlights and round foglights, swollen bumpers, but at the same time a playful blue body color, white stripes on bonnet, white mirrors and white cap roof.

In the cabin - the same story. Everything is round and cartoony: a speedometer bowl in the middle of the front panel, inside which the LCD display of the multimedia system fits, round ventilation system deflectors, a “winged” round display air conditioner, round buttons on the steering wheel, oval pedals and a round tachometer perched right on the steering column. Even the interior door handles - and they have a semicircular shape. In general, fans of cubism will not like it here.

    The seats also have a rounded shape, and the height adjustment here is made by a lever with a round base.

    On the ceiling there is a lever with which you can adjust the color of the backlight in the cabin (this is an option).

    The multimedia system control joystick can be rotated, tilted in different sides and press. On the sides of it are the "Home" and "Menu" keys.

    On skid-rails above the central tunnel, various accessories are installed that can be moved between the front and rear of the cabin - for example, an eyeglass case, as on a test car.

    In the center of the front panel is a huge speedometer, which has an integrated LCD display. There is navigation and access to mobile applications.

    Under the climate control unit - "toggle switches" of power windows and central lock. Below it are the buttons for turning on the parking sensors and other auxiliary systems.

But, despite its frivolous image, the MINI Countryman turned out to be quite practical. The front seats will be comfortable even for tall drivers - thanks to the steering wheel for tilt and reach, and the ability to adjust the seat height. Behind - also not particularly crowded. Moreover, the rear sofa can be ordered both in a double version - with an "organizer rail" in the middle, and in a traditional, "triple" one. But you won’t have to pay extra for any of the options: separate rear seats are a free option. But in fact, and in another case, the seats have longitudinal adjustment and backrest angle adjustment.

Even the trunk here is not at all tiny: 350 liters with the rear seat backs up (more than the B-class hatchbacks), and 1170 liters when folded. There is a backlight and a 12-volt outlet.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2016, the official premiere of the 2nd generation MINI Countryman crossover took place. New model turned out to be noticeably larger than its predecessor and received quite significant changes both in terms of design and technically.

The British brand put the SUV on the assembly line of the VDL group in Holland, where hatchbacks and third-generation MINI cabriolets are also assembled in parallel. The start of car sales in the European market fell on February two thousand and seventeen, and after the SUV reached Russia.

Exterior

When creating the new 2018 Mini Countryman, the automaker needed to refresh the design of the model, making it more masculine, without ruining the brand image. As a result, the development appearance it was decided to entrust the Bavarians, and they coped with the task.

At the front, attention is drawn to an unusual radiator grille with a wavy pattern and lowered corners, which, together with aggressive lighting technology, forms a disgruntled face. Also noteworthy is the muscular crossover hood with longitudinal decals.



Changes in dimensions made it possible to make the MINI Countryman 2018 in a new body the most harmonious model in the line of the British brand. The all-terrain vehicle retained its relief shapes and proportions, while receiving more puffy wheel arches and a stylish “hanging” roof.
